Speed Limit Reduced on Dubai Roads

19 October 2009, DUBAI — The speed limit cushion at which radars will flash for over speeding has now been reduced by 10km from the existing 20km.
The new rule that will come into force from next month will be applicable separately for trucks, buses and taxis. Lt-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander in Chief of Dubai Police has instructed the Dubai Traffic Police Department to follow the new guidelines. Brigadier Mohammed Saif Al Zafin said the decision will be implemented to reduce accident deaths which caused by them . Giving an example, he said, if the speed limit on a road is 100km/hr, the fixed and mobile radars will register on the computer vehicles travelling at 11km/hr instead of at 120km/hr. He said heavy trucks, mini buses and taxis cause problems on road which results in deaths in accidents as a result of speeding . He said, “Reducing the radar control speed limit will decrease serious accidents by 10 per cent during the next coming months .” He said that in the year 2008, 22 people died in incidents involving mini buses, 16 died in pickup caused accidents while 24 died in heavy trucks mishaps. Deaths involving taxis was numbered at 38. During the nine months of the current year, the number of corresponding deaths were 56, 10 ,15 and 20 respectively. Brig. Zafin said the lack of driving discipline and speeding were the main causes for the accidents. |
