Director of the General Department of Traffic Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin said that according to insurance companies' reports, most accidents caused by cruise control errors are due to the poor repair jobs carried out by non-specialised garages.
He said that motorists often rely too much on cruise control, adding that the negative side of fixing a cars speed is that it reduces a driver’s focus, but on the plus side, he said, if driver’s keep focused on their surroundings, it’s a good way of relaxing the leg muscles, especially on long journeys.
The Dubai Police has published on its Facebook page practical tips that can help bring the car to a stop in the event that the vehicles cruise control malfunctions.
These include turning the hazard lights on to warn other motorists of a problem; putting the transmission into the neutral position; turning off the engine and restarting it again immediately.
Maj-Gen Al Zafin said if the first method does not work, the driver should press on the brakes gradually and continuously until the car comes to a complete stop.
And if the vehicle still fails to stop, the driver should raise the hand brake gradually or switch the transmission from the neutral position to the D position continuously. -news@khaleejtimes.com
