Seven killed as Mumbai-bound Volvo bus catches fire

Seven people were charred to death when a Volvo bus operated by Bangalore-based National travels hit the road divider and caught fire on NH 4 near Bankapur Cross in Haveri District in Karnataka on Thursday early morning.

According to police, the bus was on its way from Bangalore to Mumbai. While many passengers broke open the windows and escaped after the accident that occurred at 3.20 a.m., three were charred to death. Four others died later. Haveri district police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot, said Inspector General of Police (North Range), Bhaskar Rao.

While injured have been shifted to the Haveri district hospital, details are awaited, Mr. Rao told The Hindu. While the injured have been shifted to burns ward of KIMS, Hubli, the driver of the ill fated bus is absconding.
