1,037 ATMs shut down in Bangalore
BANGALORE, November 25, 2013
"The process of initiating action has begun," Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar told “The Hindu”, when asked if the police were shutting down kiosks that did not have security. The Bangalore Police shut down 1,037 ATMs in the city on Sunday after they failed to comply with their directive on security measures. Earlier, the police began inspecting the estimated 2,900 kiosks to ensure that the banks had posted security guards and installed CCTV cameras and alarm systems as the three-day deadline for them to do so expired at 4 p.m. The authorities set the deadline after a woman, Jyothi Uday, was attacked in a kiosk on November 19 by an unidentified assailant. “The process of initiating action has begun,” Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar told The Hindu, asked whether the police were shutting down kiosks that did not have security. Some banks have voluntarily closed down ATMs as they could not arrange for security guards. But most said they were confident of hiring security guards by Monday. Meanwhile, the probe into the attack gained momentum after the Andhra Pradesh police found video footage from a kiosk in Kadiri taluk of Anantapur district, which showed a person with striking similarities to the suspect. |
